Darwin today was not the Darwin yesterday

There is no doubt that the idea of Darwinian Evolution revolutionized modern scientific thinking, with his extensive experience studying wildlife in the Galapagos Islands, and his subsequent conclusions on natural selection and descent with modification. When we think of evolution, we think of the scientist who brought this concept to light in the 19th century, Charles Darwin.

Unconventional Evolution

The theories that Charles Darwin brought forth in the late 1850’s sparked scientific debate across the entire world. The ideas brought forth through his theory of evolution were labeled outlandish and nonsensical. He questioned the very creation of mankind, something scientists had believed to be fact for decades. He proved that science has the capability, and the power, to influence an entire society’s way of thinking. It is because of men like Charles Darwin that scientists today are not completely rejected when they propose eccentric, unconventional theories. Darwin proved that science was capable of so much more than just experiments and numbers. Through observations of the nature world, with the inhabitants that roam it, he came to the conclusion that man did not miraculously come from nowhere. Instead, Darwin concluded that we were just heavily evolved mammals that adapted and changed with our environment. Because of his findings, we now understand our world in an entirely different manner. Darwin was ridiculed and scorned for his proposals: “Some of these ‘mental riotings’, as he dubbed them, took him very far along the road of materialism, the philosophical doctrine of believing that there were no spiritual or divine forces in nature, only matter. If he denied the createdness of everything, where did that leave human beings and our hopes of salvation?” (Browne 42). Darwin questioned the very basis of human life in the 1850’s. He challenged the ideals of the Church, and he paid a price for it, which he knew he would. His ideas could not necessarily be proven through experimental demonstrations, and therefore were deemed almost ludicrous, but this did not persuade Darwin. He would not be outlasted by the clergymen who so desperately wanted him to fail. Darwin set a precedent of excellence for scientists, as well as science in general, with his work in the mid 19th century because he challenged fundamental beliefs and proved theories never thought possible in ‘unconventional’ scientific practices.

Darwinism’s Effect on Society

The development of Darwinism changed the general thinking of the world, while unlocking the truth behind both Earth and life. Beforehand the western world had a general consensus that God was the creator of life and that we were made in his image. The idea that humans are actually descendants of apes was greatly criticized at first, but the discovery of evolution in both humans and other organisms has been proven. Continue reading

Dependence on Technological Advancements

Technology can be described as the advancement of computers, smartphones, or any type of high level machinery. Many people in today’s world could not imagine life without modern day technology. Yet, with that said, technology can be viewed in an entirely different light. Technology is not a necessity in life; technology is used to alter the future by breaking new barriers and inventing tools that enable people to do things they never thought possible before. In David Nye’s, “Can We Define Technology?”, technology is viewed as a simple means to an end. In other words, Nye states that, “The central purpose of technologies has not been to provide necessities, such as food and shelter, for humans had achieved these goals very early in their existence. Rather, technologies have been used for social evolution” (1). As humans, we are all capable of achieving a satisfactory lifestyle, yet we recognize the capabilities of technology, but this admiration can only go so far.

I believe that technology can be defined as the leading component in social evolution and social change. No one was aware the the discovery of a the hammer would lead to the development of using nails to build. This then led to the invention of the nail gun, which in turn made it possible to construct homes in five times the amount of time it would take if you had a hammer. Technology is the forefront of social evolution. We as humans evolve with the likes of technology; we adapt to the new technological advances only to have to adapt to new ones the next day. Technology is an ever changing field that is at the peak of its’ production in the 21st century.

It is my conclusion that technology does not evolve through society, society evolves through advancements in technology. As a society, we sit around being lead and influenced by our current technology only to be satisfied with the newest and latest advancement into the future. The process is everlasting, yet I am afraid most people unaware of the control and limitations technology has placed on our lives. Our respect and dependency on technology has become far too great as it has become the pacemaker for many people in their lives, and unfortunately, I do not see that changing any time soon.
