This exhibition showcases the work of seven artists born in China or Taiwan, who are now living or working in Maine. Employing a variety of Asian and American cultural influences, these artists often address issues faced by people who have left their original homes to make new ones in this country. For these artists, “home” is not necessarily a physical location; “home” can also exist in the conscience, as a state of mind.
The title, SomewHERE, alludes to the ambiguity of the space between cultures, while also highlighting these artists’ presence here in Maine. The diverse styles, subjects, and media used by these artists demonstrate the many paths they have traversed, and, more importantly defy stereotypes. By recognizing the individuality of the artists, we discover each one reflecting upon his or her experiences in unique ways. Collectively, they provide a contemplative space for us to enjoy.
