It is made of mud, salt, and basalt rocks.\u00a0\u00a0 The coil is 1,500-foot-long (460\u00a0m), 15-foot-wide (4.6\u00a0m) and surrounded by extremely salty water: 27% salinity, perfect for halophilic Archaea, whose characteristic color makes the art installation pop with pink.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-96 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/peck-laboratory\/files\/2018\/02\/Bacteriorhodopsin_subunit_1X0S.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"220\" height=\"280\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bacteriorhodopsin\">Bacteriorhodopsin<\/a><\/strong> is a trans-membrane protein, seen here with its cofactor, retinal (in purple), bound within the seven helices.
