In a panel discussion on Colby’s campus, a Colby administrator high up in the planning process noted that these possible rent increases are 10-15 years down the road.

How will the College enforce the good behavior of students living in the downtown dorm?

Unclear. This is question that deserves further pondering. Will Colby Security drive downtown to check up on the Downtown dorm residents? Will the Waterville police have to assume this role?

I’ve heard rumors of a shuttle. What’s the deal?

There will be a shuttle to transport students from campus to downtown. It has been suggested several times that all Waterville residents should have access to this shuttle. The College appears to be amendable to this idea, although the route, timing, and payment methods are all undefined currently.

When will construction begin on the downtown dorm?

Construction is anticipated to begin in 2017, with completion expected during the 2018-2019 school year.

Who should I talk to if I have a question/concern?

If you want to send your question into a deep internet void, the College’s downtown website has a link to submit questions.

The nature of democracy is such that we can reach out to Mayor Nick Isgro and make sure he represents Waterville’s interests in discussions with Colby.

On the Colby end, Brian Clark, Assistant to the President and Director of Planning, is a powerful decision maker.

I want to be involved with the planning process. How can I have my voice heard?

Go to town hall meetings! Meetings are held sporadically on Colby’s campus and in downtown for folks to express their concerns and ask questions. You can get emails with information about these meetings by subscribing to the email list on the Downtown website.

Organize your own meetings with your church, school or work community. Many pockets of Waterville have not heard the news yet but continued discussion will result in a better outcome for all.

Although these are ways to have your voice heard, much of the planning is happening between Colby and Waterville political elites. For example, Colby purchased the land for the downtown dorm before consulting Colby students or the Waterville community, suggesting a “ask forgiveness rather than permission” policy. However, as you can see from our Action Plan, we can all advocate for small changes that will greatly improve the outcome of the project.

A quick Google search for Colby revitalization project leads the curious Waterville resident to this carefully curated page. Did you find what you needed?
