While this is not an architectural rendering and plans for the building are still in process, it shows the potential for this historic building.

Dorm Specifics

The aesthetics and details about the downtown dorm were still in planning when we interviewed Brian Clark. Brian Clark and the President’s office are focusing on the economics of the move, and will work out the details of the dorm closer to the construction of the project. The dorm is planning to be ready for Colby students beginning Fall of 2018.

What do Waterville residents think?

Advantages

Waterville residents are optimistic about the increased economic possibilities of increased Colby students living directly downtown. They are excited about increases in consumers at the many stores and shops downtown.

Disadvantages

The main theme Waterville residents expressed as a concern was parking. With the new dorm taking up a good chunk of the concourse (approximately 90 spaces) and the potential addition of 200 cars (Colby students and faculty), residents are concerned of parking limitations in the area.

Currently, the Farmer’s Market is located in the Concourse. With the dorms going into the parking lot, the farmer’s market will have to find a new home. This is a cause of concern for many Waterville residents due to the fact that the farmer’s market is in a spot that is accessible for many. Residents can walk to the market for fresh, affordable food, but a change in location may make it more difficult for them to access this food, especially if they do not have a means of transportation.

To address these issues, the City of Waterville, the Department of Transportation, and Colby have all teamed up to conduct an extensive study. On Monday, May 9th, 2016 there was a town meeting about the downtown traffic study.

What do Colby students think?

Advantages

Colby students recognize the advantages of living so close to many of Waterville’s great downtown restaurants and stores.
