I decided on the DIS Architecture Foundations program because it is such a hands-on design studio, and because Copenhagen has a great selection of modern Danish architecture. And I knew, going into the program, that it would be a great experience, not just academically. But I never expected to love the city and the Danish culture so much- and these are the most important reasons as to how I came to cherish the city as one of my favorite places in the world.

I lived in the middle of the city, an eight-minute walk from my classes. My short commute was great, and the cobblestoned pedestrian streets that surrounded our apartment were an added bonus. I lived in the Green LLC, which was a house of about twenty-
two Americans interested in sustainability/being green. I thought this was a great choice because it provided me with a network of friends immediately- people with whom to explore the city and live as a community.

Something that I was really taken by was the biking culture of Copenhagen: it was contagious. The heavy bike traffic that I encountered on my short walk to school was astounding at first- until I became part of it. From talking on the phone, riding in heels, carrying multiple children, groceries slung over the shoulder, and the most graceful dismounts, the Danes could do it all on a bike. I set my goals high, and by the end of the semester, it was an incredibly accomplished feeling to be sitting in the slew of bikers during rush hour, on H.C. Andersens Boulevard, waiting for the bike stoplight to turn green. The ease and openness of this mode of transportation opened the city up to me; and made the city accessible. I attribute this to the bicycle’s fast speed, yet level of connection and closeness to the Danish surroundings. In Denmark, biking seemed less of an athletic endeavor and more of a practical way to get around. And the Danes do this all year round- biking to work even in the coldest and wettest weather. Biking is a way of life!

Now that I’m back at Colby, the contrast between the Danish landscape and the hills of Waterville is more apparent than ever. One of the most important aspects of Copenhagen that made it possible for people to rely on their bikes is that the whole city is flat- I felt like I could bike almost endlessly, uninhibited by strenuous geography- another feature that made the city and its outskirts feel incredibly accessible to me.

Other unique aspects of Copenhagen that I really appreciate are its parks and playgrounds. These reminders to get out and play sprinkled throughout the city set Copenhagen apart from other European capitals or American cities that I have visited. I felt like Copenhagen really cares about the well-being of the public by building so many pedestrian-oriented spaces. The play structures, swings, monkey bars, bicycle bridges made the city a welcoming place for pedestrians- and an awesome place to study abroad. The developed waterfront was one of my favorite areas in the city. Along the harbor, there is a continuous boardwalk that brings people right up to the waterfront, providing a reason to step outside the office or eat lunch in the sun. I witnessed many people jumping into the harbor in the warm weather, and even tried it myself. You can rent “GoBoats” to putt around the harbor, bounce on in-ground trampolines, or simply stroll along the water. This is a photo of one of my favorite spaces, called “The Wave”; Another great piece of urban design in Copenhagen is called “Superkilen”. The playful attitude of these outdoor areas reflects a feeling of general contentment, care and concern for the common person that I felt strongly during my stay in Denmark.

Alison Grover ’16 Architecture Major / Anthropology Minor DIS Copenhagen, Denmark (Spring 2015) I studied abroad in Copenhagen, Denmark during Spring 2015.
