Willard Arnold

(February 1, 1897 – September 24, 1969)

Arnold served as the Vice Chairman for Waterville’s Urban Renewal Authority from 1961 until 1969. He was a prominent Waterville businessman and civic leader, living at 23 Temple Street. He was born in Waterville and received his high school education from Phillips Exeter Academy. After graduating from Phillips Exeter, Arnold entered the U.S. Army flying service during World War I. When he returned back to the U.S., Arnold attended Colby College and received a job on Wall Street shortly after graduation. In 1923 Arnold returned to Waterville to join the W.B. Co., which was a hardware store located at 103-109 Main Street. He eventually became president and treasurer of the company.

Arnold has a long list of jobs and positions held over his life. He was a member of the price control board during World War II and became the vice chairman of the Waterville Industrial Development Corporation when it first came about in the early 1950’s. Arnold was also a founder and director of the Maine Publicity Bureau, director of the Institute for Maine Industry at Colby College, president of the Maine Merchants Association, president of the New England Hardware Dealers Association, director of the Federal Trust Co, and chairman of the Seton Hospital Advisory Board. Arnold was also a member of the Universalist-Unitarian Church, Waterville Finance Board, Waterville Rotary Club, American Legion, Waterville Masons Club, and Waterville Elks Club.
