{"id":307,"date":"2010-08-10T22:11:05","date_gmt":"2010-08-11T02:11:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/mainebirds\/?p=307"},"modified":"2010-08-11T19:34:20","modified_gmt":"2010-08-11T23:34:20","slug":"second-edition-of-birds-of-peru","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/web.colby.edu\/mainebirds\/2010\/08\/10\/second-edition-of-birds-of-peru\/","title":{"rendered":"Second Edition of Birds of Peru"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Princeton University Press has recently released the second edition of the Birds of Peru by Thomas Schulenberg, Douglas Stotz, Daniel Lane, John O\u2019Neill and the late Ted Parker.\u00a0 This edition is a revised version of the award-winning 2007 first edition.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/mainebirds\/files\/2010\/08\/Birds-of-Peru2.gif\" rel=\"prettyPhoto[307]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-315\" title=\"Birds of Peru\" src=\"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/mainebirds\/files\/2010\/08\/Birds-of-Peru2-212x300.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"212\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/web.colby.edu\/mainebirds\/files\/2010\/08\/Birds-of-Peru2-212x300.gif 212w, https:\/\/web.colby.edu\/mainebirds\/files\/2010\/08\/Birds-of-Peru2.gif 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 212px) 100vw, 212px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This guide covers all of the 1,817 species found in Peru. Subspecies, sexes and morphs are illustrated with O\u2019Neill and Lane\u2019s appealing illustrations.\u00a0 Twenty-five species not covered in the first edition are included.\u00a0 Additional plates are included in the second edition as well.<\/p>\n<p>This guide is a model for presenting lots of information in a minimum of space.\u00a0 The organization follows the usual field guide format with text on the left-hand page and illustrations of those species described on the right.\u00a0 At the top of each left-hand page, a paragraph is devoted to all the species (usually five or six) on that page.\u00a0 Each species is then covered with data on length and concise text on distribution, habitat, behavior and identification feature.\u00a0 Information on voice and non-vocal sounds (like wing whistles in some doves) is provided as well.\u00a0 A small map is given for each species in the left-hand margin.<\/p>\n<p>For me, a mark of a great field guide is my desire to pick the guide up and read random pages.\u00a0 In short, to hold the book.\u00a0 This guide certainly qualifies in that regard.\u00a0 It is a treasure.<\/p>\n<p>At 664 pages, the book is a substantial volume.\u00a0 But at 5.75 x 8.5 inches in size, the book can be taken into the field in a small shoulder or lumbar pack or even in a generous vest pocket.<\/p>\n<p>Having returned recently from a birding trip to Ecuador, I realize now that I should have carried a copy of Birds of Peru with me in the field.\u00a0 There are only 14 species of endemic birds in Ecuador so the vast majority of the Ecuadorean avifauna is covered in the Birds of Peru.\u00a0 The Birds of Peru is certainly easier to carry into the field than the voluminous guide to the birds of \u00a0Ecuador written by Robert Ridgely and Paul Greenfield.<\/p>\n<!--themify_builder_content-->\n<div id=\"themify_builder_content-307\" data-postid=\"307\" class=\"themify_builder_content themify_builder_content-307 themify_builder tf_clear\">\n    <\/div>\n<!--\/themify_builder_content-->\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Princeton University Press has recently released the second edition of the Birds of Peru by Thomas Schulenberg, Douglas Stotz, Daniel Lane, John O\u2019Neill and the late Ted Parker.\u00a0 This edition is a revised version of the award-winning 2007 first edition.
