When the leaves fall off the trees, I do miss the lushness of color. However, I find it rewarding to get to see the bones of the trees, the structure of roots, trunks, branches, and twigs. It is clearer then, what the trees are all about. There is stiffness, but also gesture, a much slower gesture than ours. The trees are seeking light, stretching out branches, strengthening them, spreading out to reach past shadows, to get as many leaves out to the sunlight as it can and to support the development of fruit or nuts. They have been capturing and storing the sun\u2019s energy in the form of sugars and starches and proteins. They are live solar collectors and batteries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In my work, I like to look for rhythms and patterns (such as the branching and the shapes of the patches of sky). Light has always been one of the first and most motivating of forces that prompt me to paint. The colors and contrasts give the taste of the day.<\/p>\n\n\n

I came upon the strange scene of this pile of piglets in a rest stop vending machine, on my way to make our last visit to the grandchildren before starting COVID isolation. The artificial lighting sucked the eye to towering displays of luridly colored, plush animals, the only spots of bright color in the space. But it was the piled-up piglets that spoke to me the most. We were just learning that humans\u2019 encroachment on wildlife and our meat markets were likely the reasons that the Coronavirus became the frightful pandemic that it was. As cute as each toy was, the haphazard tumble of pink bodies spoke to me of the need to hold our fellow creatures in higher regard. Apparently, I like painting challenges like this one. It does seem to engage me to make sense out of a jumbled scene.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
