The idea of \u201ctransitions\u201d in my work relates to seasons, times of day, climate change, and, in the case of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">The Pregnant Mares,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> life transitions. I painted <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">The Pregnant Mares<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> while in residence in Hofsos, Iceland, at the Baer Art Center, also an Icelandic horse stud farm. The long June days in Iceland coincide with the foaling season. Watching the lumbering mares struggle with their carrying weight over the stark landscape struck a familiar chord. As the solstice arrived, so did several foals. I often seek out transitional times of day, finding that light most intriguing. In Iceland, daylight extended for almost twenty-four hours. By returning to the same vistas over the residency, the onset of spring could be captured in a tuft of grass or a wildflower. The North Atlantic corridor often experiences extreme seasonal shifts also, and more so with climate change. For this particular residency, the preparations made for inclement weather fortunately did not need to be implemented.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I have worked in the landscape for the past twenty-six years.
