Artist’s Statement <\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I was following a game trail through the woods and stumbled upon an artificial, blazed trail that crossed it. The blazed trail seemed to have a clearer purpose, but perhaps only a fixed destination and a sense of urgency was the difference. The animal trail seemed more curious and explorative as it meandered along, less in a hurry but perhaps no less determined. Coming upon a stone wall in the woods or a fragment of barbed wire grown into a tree brings the same shock of awareness that you have entered a transformative space; a space that was at one time ordered by someone and made to be productive for human endeavor. What dreams were dreamt here of taming the wildness only to see them fade back into time?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTerrain vague\u201d is a term that describes those sometimes awkward spaces where nature and artificial environment come up against each other. My fascination with Google Earth allows me to see what is above the ground-level view of the North Woods. The strip cuts and clear cuts viewed from above reveal a massive, interconnected maze of rune-like glyphs that provide the resource extraction of modern forestry. The modest 20-foot corridor that wiggles along the Maine-Canadian border seems demure in comparison.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
