Nora Tryon

Artist’s Statement

I am part of a culture that has attempted to tame wilderness. “Taming” sounds more benign than conquering or destroying, but the drive for power builds, and the means to fulfill that drive evolve. Taking part in the lust for power requires the participator to suspend her judgment and engage in wearing blinders. The blinders prevent taking a long view, forcing a narrow, focused, short-term perspective that ignores the reality of interconnection.

When we forget this core reality, we make decisions that are at best short-sighted and at worst horrific.

My work focuses on the truths of that inter-connection: that humans and nature are not separate but related, made of the same stuff. Destroying part will eventually destroy all.
