Responding to the theme Marks and Tracks as a painter was a satisfying journey with many subject choices as well as symbolic or metaphorical ideology to consider. I was fortunate to spend part of this past winter in Georgetown, Maine. Known for its sweeping views of islands, rocky coasts, and an abundant coastal forest, the marks and tracks offered in Georgetown range from rocks with mineral streaks and ocean wear, to trees with insect infestations, to actual tracks from our aviary friends as well as animals with two legs, four, and many more. What ultimately caught my attention was an unearthly yellow lichen forming on some geometric stones on the tip of Indian Point. The precision of these yellow orbs act as evidence of “other,” be it spiritual or otherworldly, which sent my imagination soaring about who left this marking with the details as unique as a snowflake in patterns unimaginable, and as a lesson on taking note and making your mark.
