Michel Droge

Michel Droge, The Sea From Wild Knoll Garden, oil on linen, 9 x 12 in., 2025.

The Sea from Wild Knoll Garden was painted alongside Sturgeon Moon Rise during a summer residency in 2025 at Surf Point in York, Maine. It was painted en plein air in a garden planted by Carly Glovinsky, that sits in the footprint of the building where May Sarton lived and worked, on a hill on the Surf Point property called Wild Knoll. The fog in the morning would hover like a mist above the grassy field down to the ocean, presenting me with a gorgeous reflection of morning light and oceanic views.

Michel Droge, Sturgeon Moon Rise, oil on canvas, 8 x 10 in., 2025.

Sturgeon Moon Rise was painted alongside The Sea from Wild Knoll Garden during a summer residency in 2015 at Surf Point in York, Maine. Sturgeon Moon Rise reflects the omnipresent moon as it rose up from the water each night while I was in residence. It gave off the most beautiful orange light that is so rarely seen. The reflection of the orange moon on the water and through my glass window presented such a mesmerizing light, that I watched it every night from my dark studio until it was out of sight.
