Michel Droge

Artist’s Statement

During the lockdown of 2020, I was particularly interested in how we caged ourselves and how we escaped that entrapment. Tiger and Elephant’s Dream are two paintings from this time that explore the dreamlife of wild creatures that are often living in captivity. My time is often spent in the wilderness wandering and reflecting upon the interconnectedness of things. How can one species’ suffering be thought of as anything but connected to the greater community and entanglement of all life on this planet, and most likely, the entire universe? I think of dreaming as a universal mode of escape and a method to channel the collective unconscious, and I began to consider how all creatures dream. Despite our waking life’s entrapments, we are all free in dreams.
