Gary Green

Gary Green, Color Field Studies, archival pigment prints, 11 x 14 in. each, 2025.

The three photographs shown, Color Field Studies, 2025, are part of an ongoing series of color photographs. Though I most often work with black-and-white film, the color in these photographs is absolutely essential, yet not as important as the light that shines directly through the leaves and even through the camera’s lens.

That is the true subject here. Light—natural, stroboscopic (flash), or from artificial sources—is the most critical ingredient in a photograph, a word derived from the Greek for “light drawing.” What I am most interested in “drawing” in this case is the spectral light and its effects on the foliage.
