Flowers have their peak moments. Seen before, during, and after their peak, these moments measure time. The heads of these roses invited me to look into their layered interiors to greet them as individuals. Initially perky, the heads began to look down and away as time passed and leaves became dry and brittle. The change was not reversible. These individuals presented a new stage for me to examine. I read human emotions into their steps away from their youthful freshness. My sense of loss delivered my desire to give them a dark ground, and to have these two lowered heads look away from each other as if in respect for the inevitable change they experienced.
