Avy Claire

Artist’s Statement

My work has always been about the forces of nature. I imagine a veil, and if you lift that veil, you get to the energy that is behind the “landscape” in front of your eyes. This is the place that most excites and interests me: a place where I understand the connectedness of all things, a place of fragile beauty. I can be painfully aware of how the human force intersects with this fragile place, often resulting in—to put it bluntly—a messy place.

Mark-making and process are integral to my studio practice, and these paintings become a metaphor where I push the mess of paint around on panels (here with blades and squeegees) to make some sort of order and, as an artist, to represent what I see. I can only hope to share the connectedness of all things and a process that comes out of a desire to make beauty and order from the mess.
