Dr. Anthes served a long while as the president of UCAR (University Corporation for Atmospheric Research) and has focused much of his research on mesoscale meteorology and extreme weather such as tropical cyclones. As a young up-and-coming undergraduate meteorologist, Anthes got to know Simpson at NOAA. He co-authored a book with Joanne and others in 2003.
