Dr. Washington has been engaged in meteorological research for over 50 years, served as the chair of the National Science Board, and was awarded the National Medal of Science by President Barack Obama. Currently, his research focuses on climate change using Community Earth System Model (CESM). Joanne was seen as a mentor by Dr. Washington as he began his research career, especially as she preceded his presidency in the American Meteorological Society.
