Joanne Simpson

Discover the impact of one brilliant woman on the theories and people of meteorology.

Pacific Cloud Hunt Footage

Joanne never feared a storm, but instead flew headfirst into violent winds. In 1957, early into her work at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, Dr. Simpson flew around the Pacific with photographer Claude Ronne in hopes of finding patterns for modeling cloud behavior in the tropics. Clouds were her passion, and this footage documents her intimacy with analyzing intricate cloud patterns.
