{"id":588,"date":"2011-06-08T14:09:34","date_gmt":"2011-06-08T18:09:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/jewsinmaine\/"},"modified":"2011-12-19T09:52:12","modified_gmt":"2011-12-19T14:52:12","slug":"exhibition","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/web.colby.edu\/jewsinmaine\/exhibition\/","title":{"rendered":"Exhibition"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1 style=\"text-align: center\">Lobster and Latkes: Jewish Life in Maine<\/h1>\n<p>What has it meant to be a Jew from Maine? \u00a0There\u2019s no single answer to this question. \u00a0After\u00a0all, Jews think about their Jewishness in many\u00a0different ways: as a religious identity, a cultural\u00a0heritage, a source of ethnic pride.<\/p>\n<p>Maine is equally\u00a0diverse, and its Jews have lived in towns large\u00a0and small from Kittery to Fort Kent. \u00a0Maine\u2014and\u00a0Jewishness\u2014have also changed a lot since the\u00a0first Jews settled here in colonial times. \u00a0The story of Jewish life in Maine, one might say, is\u00a0a story of <a href=\"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/jewsinmaine\/exhibition\/intro\/lobster\/\" target=\"_self\">lobster<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/jewsinmaine\/exhibition\/intro\/latkes\/\" target=\"_self\">latkes<\/a>: thoroughly Maine and\u00a0distinctively Jewish. \u00a0It\u2019s been that way for over 200\u00a0years, but each Jewish Mainer has blended these\u00a0identities differently.<\/p>\n<p>We invite you to explore some of the stories of\u00a0Jewish life in Maine. \u00a0How does your own story\u00a0relate?
