It\u00a0offers an\u00a0abundance of recreational opportunities, beaches, fine restaurants, eclectic shops, and cultural attractions. This popular town is also the gateway to many world famous sites, some of which are listed below. Helpful information for visitors, provided by the Sorrento Tourist Board, may be found <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sorrentotourism.com\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a><\/strong>.\u00a0You can search\u00a0online for companies that offer full day\/half day trips, guided tours, and other activities from Sorrento.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<div class=\"jayq-all normal jayq-smoothness\"  >\r\n   <div  class=\"jaccordion\">\r\n       <div><a href=\"#\"><strong>\u00a0The Amalfi Coast<\/strong><\/a><\/div><div><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lonelyplanet.com\/italy\/amalfi-coast\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>The Amalfi Coast:<\/strong><\/a><\/span>\u00a0 A trip along the stunning Costiera Amalfitana, designated as a <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/whc.unesco.org\/en\/list\/830\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>UNESCO World Heritage Site<\/strong><\/a><\/span>, either by road or boat, is a highly recommended activity for Sorrento visitors.\u00a0Positano, Ravello, and Amalfi itself are just three of the many jewels on this magnificent stretch of the Mediterranean seaboard\u00a0that should not be missed.<\/div><div><a href=\"#\"><strong>\u00a0Capri<\/strong><\/a><\/div><div><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lonelyplanet.com\/italy\/campania\/capri\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Capri<\/strong><\/a>:<\/span> This legendary\u00a0&#8220;Isle of the Sirens&#8221; of Greek mythology, described by Homer in <em>The Odyssey<\/em>, was a popular resort\u00a0of ancient Roman emperors.\u00a0Boats leave roughly twice every hour\u00a0from Sorrento to Capri and the ride\u00a0takes about thirty\u00a0minutes.\u00a0Of course, no trip to Capri is complete without experiencing the incredible\u00a0<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.capri.com\/en\/s\/la-grotta-azzurra\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Grotta Azzurra<\/strong><\/a><\/span> (Blue Grotto) so try to include that in your trip if you can.<\/div><div><a href=\"#\"><strong>\u00a0Ischia<\/strong><\/a><\/div><div><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lonelyplanet.com\/italy\/campania\/ischia\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Ischia<\/strong>:<\/a><\/span> This large volcanic island offers spectacular beaches, thermal springs, spas, hiking trails, superb restaurants, a gorgeous landscape dotted by quaint villages, and stunning panoramic views. It is best suited for a full day trip. A <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ischiareview.com\/travel-from-sorrento-to-ischia-by-hydrofoil.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>hydrofoil ferry service<\/strong><\/a><\/span> operates from\u00a0Sorrento once a day, leaving at 9:30 am and returning at 6:25 pm. The trip takes an hour each way.<\/div><div><a href=\"#\"><strong>\u00a0The Ruins of Pompeii<\/strong><\/a><\/div><div><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lonelyplanet.com\/italy\/campania\/pompeii\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>The Ruins of Pompeii:<\/strong><\/a><\/span>\u00a0This famous Roman city, destroyed in 79 A. D. by the volcanic eruption of Mount Vesuvius, is a <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/whc.unesco.org\/en\/list\/829\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>UNESCO World Heritage Site<\/strong><\/a><\/span>\u00a0and attracts more than\u00a02.5 million visitors each year. It is conveniently accessed from Sorrento by road or rail, and is ideal for a half- or full-day trip.<\/div><div><a href=\"#\"><strong>\u00a0The Ruins of Herculaneum<\/strong><\/a><\/div><div><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lonelyplanet.com\/italy\/herculaneum-ercolano\"><strong>The Ruins of Herculaneum:<\/strong><\/a><\/span>\u00a0 This historic town, which is also a <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/whc.unesco.org\/en\/list\/829\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>UNESCO World Heritage Site<\/strong><\/a><\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">,<\/span> was consumed\u00a0by the same Vesuvius eruption that destroyed much of Pompeii. It is slightly farther away than Pompeii from Sorrento but still close enough for a half- or full-day trip.<\/div><div><a href=\"#\"><strong>\u00a0Mount Vesuvius<\/strong><\/a><\/div><div><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lonelyplanet.com\/italy\/mt-vesuvius\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Mount Vesuvius:<\/strong><\/a><\/span> This is reputed to be the only active volcano in mainland Europe, and it last erupted in 1944. Its most notorious eruption, of course, was in 79 A. D. and resulted in the destruction of Pompeii, Herculaneum, and other nearby settlements. Some visitors choose to go up the mountain, and even hike to the top of the crater,\u00a0for breathtaking panoramic views of Naples, the Bay, and nearby towns. You can find many online sites that provide information on climbing Mount Vesuvius including <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/wikitravel.org\/en\/Vesuvius\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>this one<\/strong><\/a><\/span>.<\/div><div><a href=\"#\"><strong>\u00a0Other Activites<\/strong><\/a><\/div><div><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sorrentotourism.com\/en\/what-to-do-free-time.php\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Other Activities:<\/strong><\/a><\/span>\u00a0If you wish to explore the Sorrento area\u00a0by kayak, rentals are available <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kayaksorrento.com\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>here<\/strong><\/a><\/span>. If you wish to go on a deep sea fishing expedition, a fisherman&#8217;s co-op that operates the popular\u00a0<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.opuledrone.com\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>O&#8217;Puledrone Restaurant<\/strong> <\/a><\/span>on the waterfront offers fishing tours. The fishing trip takes about four hours and includes a meal with wine upon return.
