As we approached the island, Louis spotted flocks of migratory songbirds, mostly Yellow-rumped Warblers, staging for the next leg of their trip south. So he went to work immediately to scope out what species were around, and in what abundances (see his trip report at the link below). Once again, the island crew was so generous and helpful, even with their hands full with all the seasonal tasks. We\u2019re grateful for all their support this past year, which certainly included dynamics new to the island schedule.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/allenisland\/files\/2017\/10\/Cathy-Kaimyn-and-red-backed-salamander.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-685\" src=\"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/allenisland\/files\/2017\/10\/Cathy-Kaimyn-and-red-backed-salamander-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/web.colby.edu\/islandcampus\/files\/2017\/10\/Cathy-Kaimyn-and-red-backed-salamander-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/web.colby.edu\/islandcampus\/files\/2017\/10\/Cathy-Kaimyn-and-red-backed-salamander-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/web.colby.edu\/islandcampus\/files\/2017\/10\/Cathy-Kaimyn-and-red-backed-salamander-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Goals today were to do one last round of looking and listening for my soundscape ecology project, to set out sound recorders for the day, and to make individual recordings of at least two species of bumblebees. We accomplished all three, and even found a few Red-backed Salamanders (<em>Plethodon cinereus)<\/em> and Green Frogs. The<a href=\"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/allenisland\/files\/2017\/10\/Cathy-checking-out-tree-growth.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-686 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/allenisland\/files\/2017\/10\/Cathy-checking-out-tree-growth-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/web.colby.edu\/islandcampus\/files\/2017\/10\/Cathy-checking-out-tree-growth-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/web.colby.edu\/islandcampus\/files\/2017\/10\/Cathy-checking-out-tree-growth-768x1024.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a> flower garden still had lots of flowers and was alive with activity. Bumblebees buzz as they foray between buds, and there were also several species of flies enjoying the nectar.
