{"id":635,"date":"2015-10-25T20:48:25","date_gmt":"2015-10-26T00:48:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/humanslashnature\/?p=635"},"modified":"2015-10-25T20:48:25","modified_gmt":"2015-10-26T00:48:25","slug":"humannature-or-human-nature","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/web.colby.edu\/humanslashnature\/2015\/10\/25\/humannature-or-human-nature\/","title":{"rendered":"Human\/Nature or &#8220;human nature&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Initially, I found Charles Traub\u2019s presentation on his street portraits to be slightly irrelevant to the \u201cHuman\/Nature\u201d theme of the course. Traub\u2019s initial black and white landscape photos captured the aesthetic beauty of the natural world, and clearly embodied the \u201cnature\u201d portion of the course, and his later street portraits depicted the Human aspect. However, there wasn\u2019t an obvious link between the two that resonated with the theme for me.<\/p>\n<p>It was only after the lecture, when I was thinking about the \u201chumanslashnature\u201d URL of the course blog that another connection occurred to me \u2013 although Traub\u2019s street portraits don\u2019t necessarily capture \u201cnature\u201d when you define it as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>the phenomena of the physical world collectively, including plants, animals, the landscape, and other features and products of the earth, as opposed to humans or human creations.\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>However, they do an exquisite job of capturing \u201cnature\u201d when it is defined as the concept of \u201chuman nature,\u201d or:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>the basic or inherent features of something, especially when seen as characteristic of it. The innate or essential qualities or character of a person or animal. Inborn or hereditary characteristics as an influence on or determinant of personality.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In his lecture, Traub says that his goal as a photographer is to \u201ccatch the moment when the mask relaxes;\u201d to photograph the instant that a subject lets down the front they show to the world and \u201creveals a moment of interpersonal connection.\u201d Essentially, Traub wants to photograph the core of human nature in each of his subjects.<\/p>\n<p>Although this definition of \u201cNature\u201d may not be what the Humanities board was considering when they chose this year\u2019s theme, exploring alternate definitions for the terms gives Charles Traub\u2019s photography multi-faceted relevance to this class.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Initially, I found Charles Traub\u2019s presentation on his street portraits to be slightly irrelevant to the \u201cHuman\/Nature\u201d theme of the course.
