{"id":49,"date":"2015-09-09T11:23:18","date_gmt":"2015-09-09T15:23:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/st197\/?page_id=49"},"modified":"2015-09-14T11:24:13","modified_gmt":"2015-09-14T15:24:13","slug":"big-dams","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/web.colby.edu\/humanslashnature\/events\/big-dams\/","title":{"rendered":"Big Dams"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>&#8220;Big Dams, Big Damage?\u00a0 Why Big States Destroy Nature and Move Millions of People in the Name of Progress,&#8221; Paul Josephson (History, Colby)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>EC Oct. 30, Friday at 4:00, Family Weekend in Lovejoy 100<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/humanslashnature\/files\/2015\/09\/stalin.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-142\" src=\"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/humanslashnature\/files\/2015\/09\/stalin.png\" alt=\"Stalin\" width=\"428\" height=\"311\" \/><\/a>Over the last 100 years national powers have focused tremendous resources on such big projects as dams (Hoover, Tucurui, Three Gorges), canals (Panama and Suez), and other extensive earth-moving operations.\u00a0 These projects have had tremendous human and environmental costs as we learn more and more.\u00a0 Less well known is why governments as different as Russia, Brazil and the US continue to support them &#8212; from Amazonia, to the Tennessee Valley, to Washington State, and to the Arctic and Siberia.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Paul Josephson, Professor of History at Colby College and affiliated with the STS Program, is a specialist in the history of twentieth century science and technology, Russian and Soviet history, and environmental history.
