He mentioned a research project that he was working on with Adam Howard, an education professor at Colby and my soon-to-be academic advisor. Pat told me all about Adam’s research on global citizenship and elite private schools around the world. He then mentioned a trip to conduct research in Taiwan that they were planning for the following summer and told me that I was invited to join on as a research assistant. At first I was hesitant to commit, I didn’t feel prepared to sign on for three weeks of research in Taiwan before even beginning my first year of college. However, once I arrived on campus and spent the time to further discuss the project and trip with Adam Howard, Pat Stewart, and Pat Dickert, I realized that this was way too great of an opportunity to pass up.

Over the first semester, our research team, which consists of several other members of the basketball team, worked with professors Adam Howard and Andie Wang. We soon found out that we were competing for a grant to conduct research at the Kaohsiung American School in Taiwan and needed to submit a grant proposal with personal statements from each of us. Suddenly the competitive juices started flowing as we realized that we needed to perfect our statements in order to receive the grant.

Each week we would meet for a couple hours, usually on sundays, to work on our personal statements and discuss the goals and timelines of the trip. Additionally, we chose individual research focuses. My focus is on Parental involvement in the lives of Taiwanese students at the Kaohsiung American School.

I’m very excited to learn more about the relationships between elite Taiwanese students and their parents. Parents at the Kaohsiung American School are known to be very involved in their children’s schooling and future. Considering that most students at the school go on to foreign universities and don’t return to live in Taiwan, their parents, along with the school, must prepare the kids to be successful outside of Taiwan. This is especially interesting to me because the Taiwanese students will have to go from having very active and involved parents to living on their own in a foreign place. I’m looking forward to talking with and interviewing these students and learning more about their expectations for this transition as well as how they feel about their parents’ level of involvement.

As I’ve learned more about the concept of “eliteness” and inequality in areas such as education, I realized that parental involvement has a lot to do with carrying on said “eliteness”. The Kaohsiung American school has many students that come from extremely wealthy families. Something I would like to learn more about is if these students have experienced their parents attempting to ensure they will carry on their families’ elite legacies. If so, I wonder how the students feel about these expectations. Do they simply accept it as a reality of their privileged lives or do they feel excessive pressure to act a certain way or follow a given path?In order to get to these answers and gain a better understanding of parental involvement, I will have to build relationships with the students and parents. I hope that they will eventually trust me enough to give honest and open answers.

This past summer, I received an unexpected facetime request from my soon-to-be teammate on the basketball team, Pat Dickert, something I later became accustomed to.
