It turns out that my first destination across the Atlantic is neither Africa nor Europe. I ended up, in fact, in the middle of the Ocean — Bermuda.

You might argue that there is no point of taking the same subject, but if you take a closer look you might actually notice they make different expressions every time you take a shot. Our professor Bruce said he even took the photograph of the same cross-bedding nine times over the years, but he enjoys how his images turn out different from one another. I also do the same every time when I fly out to somewhere; taking photographs of the sky and the ocean above the ground has been my habit for a long while. This time, though – I see the ocean, for the first time, that is superbly clear. The entire island is surrounded by pale, emerald seawater, and because our first day is relatively overcast, the horizon just attempts to deceive my eye by blending the upper and the bottom half altogether. It is a unique feeling.

Weirdly, waking up early at 5 a.m. and dealing with upper 60 degree with considerable humidity in the middle of January was not vexing. I think it was partly because the situation is not nearly close to extreme compared to our school town in Waterville, Maine, but mostly because it is just our first day of our unknown excitement. We have already made our first-day success in “geologizing” St. George’s by strolling a railroad trail, except we did far more than just looking at soils and sediments — we found living crabs hiding back of the rock, identified both living and fossilized land snails, tasted the prickly pears, and even discovered a recently hid Geocaching bottle (we were the first to sign the logbook!). What a cool place to adventure.

Perhaps it could have been even better if the sun shines out the island nicely, but I guess I shall leave it up to the whimsical, Atlantic weather. And in case the climate didn’t turn out nicely, we have some backup plan as well — stay tuned.

Ever since I came across the Pacific and started living at the tip of the West coast about a decade ago, I’ve always been wishing to go across the continent and beyond.
