So, in case you haven’t heard already, we went on a long ride today. We made it all the way to the other end of the island!

Our drive started out with a scenic route to Jobson’s Cove, a great beach with really coarse sediment. We found a lot of cool stuff, including but not limited to: chiton bits and pieces, snail shells, pieces of BIG West Indian topshell shells, tons of bivalves, scallop shells, red forams (Homotrema rubrum), various corals… I’m missing a ton, I know, and if I think of any more I will add them.

After Jobson’s Cove we drove down the road back to Stonehole Bay, where we spent a few hours yesterday. Stonehole is– so far– my favorite beach on the island for a number of reasons: 1) the great rocks to climb on, 2) the relative seclusion, 3) the vibrant intertidal life, 4) the fact that the Southampton formation outcrops there, and 5) the general beauty. The cross-bedded rocks make for excellent… and easy… climbing. No shortage of fun at this beach!

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-476" class="size-medium wp-image-476" alt="Cross-bedded rocks. Clara for scale.

When we visited the beach yesterday, we were pretty much the only people there. It could have been because of the strong wind and subsequent sand covering our bodies, or it could have been something else…. you tell me. Either way, it was great. The intertidal life is much like the rest of the island– filled with chitons and various gastropods, among other things– so it might just be my bias toward this beach that makes me think that it’s best here. There sure are a lot of chitons though! Anyway, I was happy.

After Stonehole Round 2, we went on to Church Bay Park for yet another look at some beach life and sand. It was great, per usual! Sarabeth found a MASSIVE live West Indian top shell that was covered in algae, and I found more chiton bits… and live chitons…

We drove toward the end of the island and stopped at a fossil reef! It was sweet… you wouldn’t really be able to tell at a first glance, but after looking at the rocks for a few minutes you can see that they are actually almost all fossilized red algae! So so cool.

From there we drove to the end of the island, where the dockyard is. It was quaint. The only photo I took today was from the dockyard. It is:

Classic

They’re probably talking about bonefish, but who knows?

Anyway! After looking around the dockyard a bit, we began the long trip back to BIOS. Stopped in Hamilton for hot/caffeinated drinks, then made our way home just in time for dinner. It was a great day, and a full one. Per usual I am happy with it!

Hi all!
