I was lucky enough to break down right next to a parking lot (albeit right next to a busy traffic circle) and even luckier that we were so close to Hamilton that we could just walk to the moped shop and they gave me a new bike. I have to give the people at Oleander Cycles credit, they were really quick to send me on my way with a new moped with basically no hassle and no charge, I guess they are used to these bikes breaking down all the time, especially the ones with 30,000 miles on it like mine.

After that mini-fiasco, we came back to BIOS and hopped on one of the boats to go snorkeling on the south side of the island where it was calm water with great visibility. On the way over there, our instructor was pointing out all of the mammoth houses on the shoreline and who owns/owned them in the past. He rattled off names like Oprah, Michael Jackson, and Ross Perot. His story about Ross Perot was particularly astonishing, as he told us that Perot bribed some locals to dynamite the reefs near his house so that he could get his yacht closer to the shore. I guess when money isn’t an object your morals and concern for others can go right out the window. Anyways, the snorkeling itself was awesome, the visibility was pretty much perfect, and we were right on top of dozens of reefs that were filled with different types of fish and other cool looking organisms. I finally got a hold of one of the under water cameras, and I had a blast diving down and trying to get really close to the fish for some action shots. Unfortunately, I wasn’t really that graceful or quiet about it because most of the time the fish would swim away before I could get close enough.

We ended the day by some of us going to the bar that is on BIOS property. It isn’t exactly a bar, its just a small room with some see-through refrigerators and a dart board, but I still had a blast getting to know all of the people who have been working at BIOS for a while now. I even met the port captain for their 200ft research vessel, and it just so happens he grew up in South Boston, which is really close to my house and where I played baseball all last summer. I couldn’t have been happier with how nice and inviting everyone was, even though we had never really met. I get the feeling that they were just glad to meet different people, I think its pretty lonely around here in January.

Today was our day off, so a large group of us toured some parts of the Island we hadn’t seen yet, including a longer pit stop in Hamilton. We found an awesome beach that looked like it was straight out of one of those pre-made screen-savers that comes with a new PC. In other words, it was so beautiful it almost seemed fake, if that makes any sense. The only issue with the beach was the wind, the wind was so strong it was crushing all of us and invading every part of our bodies. We all were able to kind of ignore it though thanks to the gorgeous views. On our way home, we stopped by the Gibbs Hill lighthouse, which is actually the tallest point on Bermuda. I was able to get over my slight fear of heights and walked out onto the observation deck. The wind, yet again, was howling, and it seemed even more intense because we were so high up. It didn’t really bother us though, as the unreal views from the top were distracting us from the wind.

Some of us are going back into Hamilton tonight to see check out the scene, so that should be fun. Hopefully the rest of our stay here is as nice as it was today, the sun was out pretty much all day and it felt like it was about 70degrees. I’m not sure what is in store for tomorrow, but either way I’m sure we will find something fun to do. Until next time!

[1
