It was pretty windy and there wasn’t much sun, so we strapped on our wetsuits (my first time wearing one) to keep us comfortable in the water (although it was still warm compared to the water in Maine). I was surprised how buoyant you are when wearing a wetsuit, which came in handy when I just wanted to float on the surface to follow a fish or look at a particular part of the reef. The only issue, however, is that it is a struggle to dive down deep to get a closer look at the fish, as the wetsuit keeps propelling you up towards the surface. When I was able to dive down deeper than 5 feet, I made the mistake of diving too quickly (I was going after a golf ball that caught my eye) and when I got down to the bottom it felt like my ears were being split open from all of the pressure. Besides that little hiccup, however, the snorkeling was awesome, I saw lots of really interesting looking fish and organisms, and just being able to interact with them was an experience in itself.

The other highlight from yesterday was dragging for plankton at night in one of the BIOS boats. We basically just went out into the harbor and towed a net that filtered out all of the water and caught the plankton in bucket at the bottom. I guess I have a personal bias towards boats, as I spend as much time as possible in the summer on our boat in Maine, so just getting on a boat again (especially in the middle of January) was awesome. After we got off the boat, we looked at the plankton under a microscope in the lab. I’ll admit I was a little skeptical about how interesting plankton could really be (I guess that’s because I’m not a huge science guy) but I was blown away with how cool the plankton are too look at. They all look like miniature variations of the larger ocean-organisms we know well, like shrimp, and their activity level was off the charts. They also exhibited some pretty cool colors and reacted strongly to change in light and any type of movement.

We went to bed yesterday expecting to wake up today to gale force winds and rain, but in typical Bermuda fashion, we woke up to sunshine and relatively calm winds. We took a ride to a dairy farm that was near the coastline and some great rock formations to explore. I was pretty excited to see the cows at the dairy farm, and I made sure to take plenty of pictures of them to show my dad who loves cows. But besides the cows, we saw some great views and some really cool rock formations, including a hole that, once we built up the courage to venture down into, led into a sort of mini cave, which was also awesome (I feel like I’m running out of words to describe all of the things we saw).

In the afternoon we took a trip to the local aquarium/zoo/natural history museum, where we got an even closer look at the different types of fish and organisms that live in Bermuda. The zoo actually had some really cool exhibits, like a Caribbean exhibit with flamingos and another exhibit that had lemurs freely walking around the zoo. The sign said to not touch the lemurs, but if your going to let lemurs walk with vistors you can bet that people are going to try and touch them (which of course we did and no one lost any fingers). I have to say I was impressed with the zoo/aquarium, I had pretty low expectations going in because I went to the zoo/aquarium in Boston so many times when I was younger that I thought they would never be exciting to me ever again (thanks mom). After we waited out a short rainstorm, we headed back to BIOS for dinner and now we are wrapping up the night before bed.

We don’t really have an exact plan for tomorrow or the rest of the trip, but I think that is fitting being on an island like Bermuda, where no matter what you do or where you go, you are bound to find something you have never seen before.

Yesterday was so eventful that I couldn’t find the energy to write about it, so I’ll do my best to capture what I considered the highlights of the past two days..

[1
