{"id":27,"date":"2013-01-21T18:43:19","date_gmt":"2013-01-21T23:43:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/geologyofbermuda\/?p=27"},"modified":"2013-01-24T19:04:22","modified_gmt":"2013-01-25T00:04:22","slug":"full-steam-ahead","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/web.colby.edu\/geologyofbermuda\/2013\/01\/21\/full-steam-ahead\/","title":{"rendered":"Full Steam Ahead"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After a brutal 4:30 a.m. wake up, 70 miles of driving, 800 miles of flying, two packets of Delta pretzels, and heart pounding taxi ride, we had arrived.<\/p>\n<p>We quickly settled in and found ourselves venturing off toward <a href=\"https:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?q=Whale+bone+Bay,+Bermuda&amp;aq=f&amp;um=1&amp;ie=UTF-8&amp;hl=en&amp;sa=N&amp;tab=wl&amp;authuser=0\">Whale Bone Bay<\/a>, where we found a lot of <a href=\"https:\/\/jhalderm.com\/pics\/2000-08=bermuda\/chiton.jpg\">chitons<\/a>. To get there, we followed the rail trail, which conveniently\u00a0follows the trail of the old rail road. Stunning views of the ocean were contrasted by cross bedding in the rock face: the sign of historic sand dunes that have since become limestone.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>I was a little displeased by the amount of trash found at Whale Bone Bay. It&#8217;s really pretty sad how we are so willing to use plastics and other materials that end up ruining the ecological and aesthetic value of such a beautiful place.<\/p>\n<p>The best part of the day for me was the view from the Lovers Lake, which is off the rail trail just north of Whale Bone Bay.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_36\" style=\"width: 7626px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/geologyofbermuda\/2013\/01\/21\/full-steam-ahead\/lovers_lake_view\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-36\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-36\" class=\"size-full wp-image-36\" alt=\"Lover's Lake, Panorama, iPhone\" src=\"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/geologyofbermuda\/files\/2013\/01\/Lovers_Lake_View.jpg\" width=\"7616\" height=\"1995\" srcset=\"https:\/\/web.colby.edu\/geologyofbermuda\/files\/2013\/01\/Lovers_Lake_View.jpg 7616w, https:\/\/web.colby.edu\/geologyofbermuda\/files\/2013\/01\/Lovers_Lake_View-300x78.jpg 300w, https:\/\/web.colby.edu\/geologyofbermuda\/files\/2013\/01\/Lovers_Lake_View-1024x268.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 7616px) 100vw, 7616px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-36\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A Panoramic view of Lover&#8217;s Lake on the right and the Atlantic Ocean on the left, in St. George&#8217;s Parish, Bermuda.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>It made for a wonderful afternoon stroll, which was followed by a brief plunge by the bio station. My body soon reminded me that I had woken up at 4:30, as I landed face down in my bed; full nap mode.<\/p>\n<p>As this day wraps up I look forward to the sunrise, recharging the turquoise of the surrounding\u00a0ocean. To the locals, a visitor who brings the rain is a welcomed one. Consider us welcome!
