Sunburnt and Sleepy… But there are Lemurs?!?

Today started out with a surge of light, that once released from the confines of a curtain, engulfed my sleepy head. It was the kind of glaring hour old sun beam that has the power to shake away dreams, snapping you into instant reality.

We started our day at Spittal Pond Nature Preserve, a good 25 minutes by moped from the bio station. What an incredible place. The cross bedding is prevalent, and you can walk right up to it. Thousands of years later, and a dune is now a rock. It is truly an amazing feat of nature. Even more incredible is notch of rock that has been carved out near Spittal Pond. On each end on the pond, the rock ridgeline along the coastline is significantly degraded (see the :12 and :20 second mark here), allowing for a recharge of new seawater in Spittal Pond during very highwater events. This most likely only occurs during hurricanes like Igor of 2010.

We also visited Jefferey’s Hole, which leads about ten feet down into a cave overlooking the ocean. It was a really cool cave that got us just a few feet above the crashing ocean. We could even see Bruce on top of the cliff above!

We clamored through the hole and headed back to the bikes Ethan spied another geocache… We’re on a roll here! It’s like treasure hunting, but with a GPS and a keen eye.

After a quick lunch back at the biostation, we headed to the Bermuda Aquarium, Museum, and Zoo. It was an incredible facility, with an even better view. Where else can you walk along side Ring Tailed Lemurs and Golden Lion Tamarins?!?

Another Successful day in Bermuda!
