First Full Day of Bermuda

Today was an exciting day on many fronts, starting out with us getting our mopeds that we will use the rest of the trip to get around the island. I couldn’t have been more excited to get my hands on a moped, and I wasn’t disappointed when we hit the road. The mopeds are actually quicker than I thought they would be, although that could just be a product of never having driven one before.  Regardless, zipping around Bermuda on mopeds provides great views (as long as you don’t crash) and a sort of wind-in-your-face type of freedom.

After we took the mopeds for some extended test drives to make sure everyone was comfortable we decided to hit up some local attractions. We went to the St. David lighthouse and were lucky enough to get to climb up to the top, where we were met with awesome views of the Bermuda coastline and inland. You can tell you are up high, however, as the wind at the top of the lighthouse was pretty viscous and I’ll admit it made me feel a little uneasy at first.

After the lighthouse we rode our way over to the St. David’s battery, where we were met with two massive cannons that were used during World War II by the British to help fortify Bermuda from incoming enemy’s. The cannons were sitting at the edge of a cliff, which we were able to climb down and see some pretty cool rock formations and one massive cave

My favorite part of the day, however, was when we went to Clearwater, where we found a beautiful small beach surrounded by extravagant rock formations (not to mention the random chickens walking around the beach as well). After wading through the water for a bit, I couldn’t resist diving in for a swim. Even though I didn’t have my wetsuit, I quickly adjusted to the cool water and had a blast swimming around and doing some snorkeling. The water is so clear that it makes it easy to spot fish and other organisms, which we saw plenty of, even with only basic snorkel gear. A lot of the Bermudians think we are crazy for swimming in January, but I considered it balmy compared to the water I’m used to in Maine.

We are all pretty tired after such a long and eventful day, not to mention tomorrows adventures are already quickly approaching. I can’t wait to continue to explore the island (I’ll ride that moped until the wheels fall off), go out on the boat, do some more snorkeling, go to the aquarium, and whatever else Bruce has planned for us. As I have quickly learned on this trip, you really can’t go wrong no matter what you choose to do on Bermuda.
