After a hearty breakfast, we boarded an open-air bus for a 45-minute ride to the trail head for our hike to Sierra Negra, one of five massive volcanoes on Isabela.<\/p>\n<p>After about two miles, we got our first view of the caldera. The caldera is roughly circular, about 7 miles across. <a href=\"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/galapagos\/files\/2011\/01\/SierraNegra.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-112\" src=\"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/galapagos\/files\/2011\/01\/SierraNegra-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/web.colby.edu\/galapagos\/files\/2011\/01\/SierraNegra-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/web.colby.edu\/galapagos\/files\/2011\/01\/SierraNegra.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>A lava flow from 2005 was easy to see. The black lava contrasted with the green vegetation adjacent to the flow that had been spared.<\/p>\n<p>We continued our hike for another two miles to a trail for Volcan Chico. This volcano is a parasitic volcano, developing from the east side of Sierra Negra. That trail descended and the ascended to the top of Volcan Chico.<a href=\"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/galapagos\/files\/2011\/01\/volcanChico.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-113\" src=\"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/galapagos\/files\/2011\/01\/volcanChico-300x213.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"213\" srcset=\"https:\/\/web.colby.edu\/galapagos\/files\/2011\/01\/volcanChico-300x213.jpg 300w, https:\/\/web.colby.edu\/galapagos\/files\/2011\/01\/volcanChico.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a> Another two-mile hike.<\/p>\n<p>The views were spectacular. Three other volcanoes could be seen along with the islands of Rabida, Santiago and Fernandina. Many fumaroles were present along with spectacular yellow, orange and sulfur deposits.<\/p>\n<p>Botanical highlights included Galapagos Tree Fern, Soapberry, Galapagos Mistletoe, Cat&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/galapagos\/files\/2011\/01\/CatsClaw.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-114\" src=\"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/galapagos\/files\/2011\/01\/CatsClaw-300x214.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"214\" srcset=\"https:\/\/web.colby.edu\/galapagos\/files\/2011\/01\/CatsClaw-300x214.jpg 300w, https:\/\/web.colby.edu\/galapagos\/files\/2011\/01\/CatsClaw.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Claw (pictured) and Galapagos Cotton.\u00a0 No reptiles were seen but we did see several good species of birds including Yelow Warbler (pictured), <a href=\"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/galapagos\/files\/2011\/01\/Yellow-Warbler.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-116\" src=\"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/galapagos\/files\/2011\/01\/Yellow-Warbler-300x209.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"209\" srcset=\"https:\/\/web.colby.edu\/galapagos\/files\/2011\/01\/Yellow-Warbler-300x209.jpg 300w, https:\/\/web.colby.edu\/galapagos\/files\/2011\/01\/Yellow-Warbler.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Vermilion Flycatcher, Small Tree Finch and Galapagos Martin.<\/p>\n<p>We made good time on the return trip, arriving back at the bus by 2 PM.\u00a0 The overall hike of 12 miles took us 5.5 hours.\u00a0 Hungry and tired, we drove to a lovely hacienda for a delightful buffet lunch.\u00a0 We had a little time back in Puerto Villamil before dinner.\u00a0 Some students went to the local beach, shared with Galapagos sea lions.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On Thursday, we had a wonderful day on Isabela.
