{"id":62,"date":"2011-01-18T20:55:46","date_gmt":"2011-01-19T00:55:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/galapagos\/?p=62"},"modified":"2011-01-25T15:31:05","modified_gmt":"2011-01-25T19:31:05","slug":"bartholome","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/web.colby.edu\/galapagos\/2011\/01\/18\/bartholome\/","title":{"rendered":"Bartholom\u00e9"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today\u2019s activities centered around a cruise to the extremely arid island of Bartholom\u00e9, a small island adjacent to Santiago.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/galapagos\/files\/2011\/01\/PinnacleWeb.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-56\" src=\"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/galapagos\/files\/2011\/01\/PinnacleWeb-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/web.colby.edu\/galapagos\/files\/2011\/01\/PinnacleWeb-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/web.colby.edu\/galapagos\/files\/2011\/01\/PinnacleWeb.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>We hired two boats to transport us there.\u00a0 One boat was slower so half of us began our trip at 5 AM this morning.\u00a0 The rest of the class started at 6 AM.<\/p>\n<p>The cruise took about 3 hours on the slow boat.\u00a0 Once there, we climbed Bartholom\u00e9 for spectacular views of Santiago and the beautiful ocean. We saw lots of evidence of volcanic activity: lava flows, cinder cones, ash everywhere.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/galapagos\/files\/2011\/01\/TiquiliaWeb.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-58\" src=\"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/galapagos\/files\/2011\/01\/TiquiliaWeb-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/web.colby.edu\/galapagos\/files\/2011\/01\/TiquiliaWeb-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/web.colby.edu\/galapagos\/files\/2011\/01\/TiquiliaWeb.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>The soil is very poor here and only a few hearty plants can make it in this habitat.\u00a0 One is the gray matplant that occurs in regular, sparse concentrations.\u00a0 The soil resources and water are so scarce that each plant needs a significant area to send out roots.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/galapagos\/files\/2011\/01\/LavaCactusWeb.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-55\" src=\"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/galapagos\/files\/2011\/01\/LavaCactusWeb-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/web.colby.edu\/galapagos\/files\/2011\/01\/LavaCactusWeb-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/web.colby.edu\/galapagos\/files\/2011\/01\/LavaCactusWeb.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>The lava cactus is the first species to colonize such volcanic habitats in the Gal\u00e1pagos.\u00a0 Both species of plants are endemic to the Gal\u00e1pagos.<\/p>\n<p>On the boat ride, we saw many pelagic birds including Nazca Boobies, Blue-footed Boobies, Red-necked Phalaropes, Gal\u00e1pagos Shearwaters, Eliot\u2019s Storm-Petrel, Red-billed Tropicbirds.\u00a0 A probable Bryde&#8217;s Whale put in an all-too-brief appearance.\u00a0 A pod of Bottle-nosed Dolphins rode our bow wave for a while, always a treat.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/galapagos\/files\/2011\/01\/Blue-footed-Boobyweb.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-52\" src=\"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/galapagos\/files\/2011\/01\/Blue-footed-Boobyweb-245x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"245\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/web.colby.edu\/galapagos\/files\/2011\/01\/Blue-footed-Boobyweb-245x300.jpg 245w, https:\/\/web.colby.edu\/galapagos\/files\/2011\/01\/Blue-footed-Boobyweb.jpg 523w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 245px) 100vw, 245px\" \/><\/a>Manta Rays were jumping out of the water for much of the morning cruise.<\/p>\n<p>Along the shores we saw Swallow-tailed Gulls and Lava Herons.\u00a0 A few American Oystercatchers with their long red bills and striking black and white colors added some contrast to the gray rocks.\u00a0 A few people got to see the Gal\u00e1pagos Hawk and Gal\u00e1pagos Penguins.<\/p>\n<p>We also went snorkeling at the base of Pinnacle Rock.\u00a0 A diversity of fish was a real treat and a few students got to swim with Gal\u00e1pagos Penguins.<a href=\"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/galapagos\/files\/2011\/01\/SnorkelersWeb.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-57\" src=\"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/galapagos\/files\/2011\/01\/SnorkelersWeb-300x161.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"161\" srcset=\"https:\/\/web.colby.edu\/galapagos\/files\/2011\/01\/SnorkelersWeb-300x161.jpg 300w, https:\/\/web.colby.edu\/galapagos\/files\/2011\/01\/SnorkelersWeb.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Tomorrow, we sail in the morning for the island of Isabela.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today\u2019s activities centered around a cruise to the extremely arid island of Bartholom\u00e9, a small island adjacent to Santiago.\u00a0 We hired two boats to transport us there.\u00a0 One boat was slower so half of us began our trip at 5 &hellip;
