Maine Lakes Resource Center: Executive Director Job Announcement

The Maine Lakes Resource Center (MLRC) is a new, 501(c)3 which has just completed a successful $2.5 million capital campaign known as Docks to Doorways. The MLRC owns two properties in the village of Belgrade Lakes: one will be a small park with docks and commercial space, and the other the home of a 3,500 square foot Maine Lakes Resource Center. (The organization and the building have the same name.) The Resource Center is scheduled to open in July of 2011, and will have office, exhibit and auditorium space, a laboratory space for Colby College, and outside demonstrations of best conservation practices.

It is the mission of the MLRC to get regional property owners to adopt best conservation practices. To this end, the Resource Center will make its auditorium and exhibit space available to other conservation groups (such as the Belgrade Lakes Association, Belgrade Regional Conservation Alliance and the Maine Congress of Lake Associations), whose programs and exhibits will educate and inspire homeowners. The MLRC will offer community activities (cultural, educational and retail) that are designed to draw people to the Resource Center. During the school year, activities will focus on educating local school children.

The MLRC Board seeks an Executive Director responsible for all facets of managing, promoting and advancing the MLRC’s mission. The successful candidate should be collaborative, entrepreneurial and have experience in:

• Fundraising including mass and direct solicitation, grant writing and foundation relations • Building a membership organization • Marketing & public relations • Communicating and collaborating well with active, hands-on volunteers and organizational partners • Planning special events • Organizing and coordinating multiple projects, programs and initiatives • Managing and motivating volunteers and colleagues • Staffing a non-profit Board of Directors and assisting them to carry out their fiduciary responsibilities.

The Executive Director should have excellent “customer service” skills, high energy and a love of people. He/She will be the Resource Center’s ambassador to the community. The Executive Director must have organization skills, be creative (this being an only partially formed venture) and very collaborative as he/she will be working with many community groups. Experience in conservation is desirable, but not required. She/he is expected to become an active participant in the Belgrade Lakes community. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record with the successful launch of a new non-profit organization.
