Are you schooled in the humanities, social sciences, or interdisciplinary studies and interested in introducing environmental issues into your courses? Why not develop a course in the rapidly evolving Environmental Humanities? Thanks to a generous grant from the Mellon Foundation Colby’s Environmental Humanities Initiative has been launched. Faculty from across the college are already participating in this exciting opportunity to expand our Environmental Humanities offerings and contribute to the rising tide of environmental consciousness and change.
This course development workshop aims to broaden disciplinary and program participation in these initiatives, and to show that there are multiple ways to integrate environmental themes into humanities courses. While it might mean including environmental content into courses that otherwise lack it, it may also mean challenging and changing the structure, practices, and assignments in our courses.
- Lunch will be provided
- Participants with faculty status will receive a $50 stipend
- Attendees should bring a (potential) syllabus, and do some brief readings in advance
- Anticipate ample time for brainstorming, small group reflective discussions, and syllabus

Our workshop facilitator will be environmental humanities scholar Greta Gaard (University of Wisconsin-River Falls).
A member of the Association for the Study of Literature and Environment (ASLE) since 1995, Greta Gaard is Professor of English and founding Coordinator of the Sustainable Justice Minor at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. She has served on the Executive Council of ASLE, and continues to serve on Editorial Boards for ecocritical and environmental humanities journals such as Ethics and Environment, Interdisciplinary Studies in Literature and Environment (ISLE), Climate Justice Press, and more. In 2014, Gaard served as an invited member of the International Review Committee for Mistra/Formas of Sweden, evaluating proposals for five-year funding of Sweden’s Environmental Humanities Consortium. Author or editor of six books, and over 100 articles and international presentations, Gaard’s most recent volume, Critical Ecofeminism, appeared in May 2017. Her creative nonfiction eco-memoir, The Nature of Home, has been translated into Chinese and Portuguese.
