{"id":1654,"date":"2011-03-08T16:20:29","date_gmt":"2011-03-08T20:20:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/eldercare\/?p=1654"},"modified":"2012-10-14T16:22:32","modified_gmt":"2012-10-14T20:22:32","slug":"aging-population-challenges-pension-system","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/web.colby.edu\/eldercare\/2011\/03\/08\/aging-population-challenges-pension-system\/","title":{"rendered":"Aging population challenges pension system"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.chinadaily.com.cn\/business\/2011-03\/08\/content_12136231.htm\" target=\"_blank\">(Xinhua)\u00a02011-03-08 13:58<\/a><\/p>\n<p>BEIJING &#8211; Aging population poses a huge challenge to China&#8217;s pension system, minister of human resources and social security Yin Weimin said Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>The country&#8217;s population is rapidly aging, and there are 170 million people over the age of 60, who account for 12.8 percent of the total population, Yin said.<\/p>\n<p>Related readings:<br \/>\nHow to cope with an old-age problem<br \/>\nOfficial: China to subsidize seniors over 80<br \/>\nAge-old problem looms for families<br \/>\nNursing homes close doors to many<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;How to increase pension has become a problem to deal with the aging population,&#8221; the minister said at a press conference on the sidelines of the ongoing parliamentary session.<br \/>\nLast year, a total of 1.3 trillion yuan ($197.9 billion) of pension premium was collected and about 1 trillion yuan was handed out, resulting in a balance of 300 billion yuan, he said.<\/p>\n<p>That added up to a combined pension balance of 1.5 trillion yuan by 2010, he said, adding the country has no difficulty in paying pension.<\/p>\n<p>Yin added that by the end of last year, China&#8217;s national social security funds exceeded 700 billion yuan.<\/p>\n<p>The government would improve measures on investment of the national social security funds to maintain and expand its total value along with the country&#8217;s economic growth, he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>(Xinhua)\u00a02011-03-08 13:58 BEIJING &#8211; Aging population poses a huge challenge to China&#8217;s pension system, minister of human resources and social security Yin Weimin said Tuesday.
