Colby students also have the opportunity to take courses on the culture and politics of drug policy and the legal system.

AY236: Illegal Drugs, Law and the State

Fall 2022: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9:30-10:45

Drawing on legal and political anthropology, we  examine the cultures of control that target the commerce and consumption of illegal drugs. We  consider the evolution of these policies as a form of statecraft, and explore their impact in a variety of historical moments and social worlds in the Americas. Case studies will include the Prohibition, cocaine, and alternative forms of political power facilitated by the drug trade.
