Colon<br \/>\nSantiago 10<br \/>\nChile<\/p>\n<p>Dear Wes, Dear Goucho [sic],<\/p>\n<p>Good to hear from you. The Parra book sounds almost<br \/>\nuntranslateable. In such a curious way, <del datetime=\"2012-01-19T20:54:38+00:00\">s<\/del>found poetry depends<br \/>\nupon the true <span style= \"text-decoration: underline;\">na\u00eff<\/span>, and I would imagine that translating it<br \/>\nmight always make it sound <span style= \"text-decoration: underline;\">faux<\/span>. Which is not to say that it<br \/>\nis not worth struggling with &#8211; and that you might not even succeed.<br \/>\nBut it does sound <span style= \"text-decoration: underline;\">hard<\/span>!<\/p>\n<p>We were just to the wonderful conference of English and<br \/>\nAmerican poets at Stony Brook. Chile was very much a subject<br \/>\nof poems: Adrian Mitchell, one of the English poets, had<br \/>\nsheltered a Chilean refuge and her children for awhile, after<br \/>\nshe managed to get out, after her husband was tortured to death &#8211;<br \/>\nfamous guitar player and singer &#8211; by the Pinochet gang.<\/p>\n<p>We brought Geoffrey Hill back up here with us for a few<br \/>\ndays. Wonderful. I think that possibly he is the best <del datetime=\"2012-01-19T20:54:38+00:00\">person <\/del>poet<br \/>\nwriting in the English language. Sometimes I think he is one<br \/>\nof the best who ever wrote in it. He gave a wonderful reading<br \/>\nlast Friday night. I wasn\u2019t too bad myself, Friday afternoon.<br \/>\nI told Geoffrey after his reading that there was only one other<br \/>\npoet on the two continents who could read as well as he. He<br \/>\ndid not hesitate for a moment, in identifying this poet.<\/p>\n<p>My book ought to arrive any day. [Written in margin: Just came!] Jane\u2019s will be another<br \/>\nmonth or so I suppose.
