October 11, 1983<\/p>\n

Dear Don,<\/p>\n

I\u2019m in the process of preparing my dossier with AWP for a
\njob search, and I would like to have three or four up-to-date
\nletters in my file. Would you be willing to update the letter you
\nwrote for me three years ago? I would be happy to get AWP to send
\nyou the letter you wrote then, if you\u2019d like.<\/p>\n

As I guess you know, things have gone from bad to worse at
\nColby-Sawyer. Enrollment is now at 405 \u201cfull-time equivalents\u201d.
\nThe faculty has had no raise for two years, and while one is promised
\nfor later on this year, the extra money won\u2019t go far–especially
\nsince we have begun this fall making \u201cdonations\u201d (as the adminis-
\ntration calls them) to our medical and dental benefits. Worst of
\nall, I am forced to work more and more outside the college to pay
\nmy bills–thus, there\u2019s less time for poetry.<\/p>\n

Not that the Devins Award–or any award–will get me a job in
\nthe current climate. But with one kid in college, and the other
\nsoon to be there, I must have job security, and a bigger salary–
\nor l<\/del>at least the opportunity, through a job in some state university
\nsystem, to get my kids free tuition.<\/p>\n

I enclosed a stamped, addressed envelope, in the hope you will
\nbe able to use it for a recommendation letter, whenever you may
\nhave a moment to spare. Incidentally, I\u2019ve just furnished U\/
\nMissouri with galley corrections. The thing is now in production,
\nbelieve it or not, to be completed before the end of November.
\nI can\u2019t wait!<\/p>\n
