Dear Don,<\/p>\n

The news about Jane is upsetting. I\u2019m certainly glad to learn she
\nis now \u201cperceptively better\u201d, and I do hope you pass on Diane\u2019s and my
\nbest wishes. I also hope that your period of chaos will soon pass.<\/p>\n

In the meantime, please forget about that poem–or any other–
\nuntil I send along a group for submission. I will be giving
\nyou slightly<\/span> revised versions of the \u201cPaul\u201d poem, \u201cThe Faith
\nHealer\u201d and maybe \u201cAprons\u201d, too. Also, I\u2019ll retype a couple
\nor three which have not been sold yet, so you\u2019ll have them all
\ntogether. Finally, even though summer has been full of work
\nto pay for Sean\u2019s college, I expect to have a couple of new pieces.<\/p>\n

They play was wonderful. There were certain parts of it, particularly
\nin the last act, which I want to talk with you about (I hope
\nwe can do that when we get together for dinner). But I
\nfound so much of it so very moving. And of course the audience
\nwas just mad for the thing. You have a deadly ear for the
\nspeech, tone and humor of this area\u2019s people. I\u2019m sure
\nthat<\/span>, as much as the play\u2019s content, was what got to those who
\nwere there on Tuesday night.<\/p>\n

I am, of course, delighted with the possibility of publishing
\na second book with Costanzo. It\u2019s also good to know of the
\n\u201cguarded interest\u201d of Godine, and I thank you for your
\nefforts there.<\/p>\n

We could not, as it turned out, get to the Hale Award ceremony.
\nI would have liked to see the presentation and to hear the reading
\nthat went with it–but I had to lecture in Claremont, a
\nvery poor substitute. Congratulations, anyway. One more medal for the
\nuniform, already sagging with decorations!<\/p>\n

\nU\/Missouri Press. Could you look it over and see if it\u2019s OK?
