I wish I could have<br \/>\nmade the changes you\u2019ll find in the enclosed earlier. In any case,<br \/>\nthey are not extensive ones. I have taken out five poems and<br \/>\nadded two new ones. The poems I\u2019ve deleted are: For My Father,<br \/>\nThe Thin Man, the two verses on \u201cfat\u201d, and Beggars. I hope I can<br \/>\nput these in a future volume, but I\u2019ve come to feel they interfere<br \/>\nwith the shape that\u2019s possible without them. The poems I\u2019ve added<br \/>\nare: Small Towns Are Passing [&amp; &#8220;After the Ice&#8221;]. Also, I\u2019ve added chapter headings<br \/>\nderived from poem titles&#8211;this to explain the movement of a journey<br \/>\nbackward in time&#8211;and I\u2019ve put back the citation from Roethke, again<br \/>\nto underscore the idea of the journey. It seems to me that the new<br \/>\ntext is more coherent and gives the poems of the book a new interest<br \/>\nand resonance.<\/p>\n<p>I imagine the manuscript you have is out right now&#8211;in which<br \/>\ncase, I hope you\u2019ll just leave it wherever it is. I\u2019m assuming that<br \/>\nthe changes are not so significant they can\u2019t be discussed later<br \/>\nif Joey should happen to hit. If your manuscript is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">returned<\/span> for<br \/>\nother submissions, the enclosed could be mailed.<\/p>\n<p>Unless, of course, you and Joey feel that the enclosed is<br \/>\nawful. Please let me know what you do think, when you can. Also,<br \/>\nplease tell me if this month is still open for a possible dinner<br \/>\nhere\u2026I enclose a check taken from the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Poetry<\/span> money I got.
