January 16, 1983<\/p>\n

Dear Don,<\/p>\n

I am sorry that you two can\u2019t come over
\nthis month, but I understand why not,
\nand I will write you again about it
\nin late February March.<\/p>\n

In the meantime, here\u2019s a poem which
\nI hope you\u2019ll look at sometime between
\nreadings and trips.<\/p>\n

My best Christmas present was two
\nbooks by Donald Hall\u2014The<\/span> Weather<\/span> for<\/span>
\nPoetry<\/span> and Claims<\/span> for<\/span> Poetry<\/span>. I am
\nstill poring over them and enjoying them.
\nWith all the talk about the lack of
\npoetry criticism today, I\u2019m glad to<\/p>\n

2\/<\/p>\n

have so much of it (the criticism<\/span>) at once!<\/p>\n

Incidentally, I recently read for the first
\ntime, and liked<\/span>, the essays in Living<\/span> off<\/span> the<\/span> Country<\/span>,
\nfrom the Michigan series. It made me
\ngo back to Haines\u2019 poetry\u2014especially that
\nof Winter<\/span> News<\/span>, which I had never seen
\nbefore.<\/p>\n

WHAT SLAUGHTERED ANIMALS CANNOT FIND<\/p>\n

The chickens cannot
\nfind their heads
\nthough they search for them,
\nfalling in the grass.<\/p>\n

And the great bulls
\nare now on their knees,
\nhaving no idea
\nof how to stand.<\/p>\n

The sheep cannot find
\ntheir voices. They run quickly
\non their sides,
\nwatching the sky.<\/p>\n
