Perhaps<br \/>\nthey will include the enclosed verses, in some form.<\/p>\n<p>In case you did not open the package containing<br \/>\nmy manuscript and see my note in it, I<br \/>\nask again the question the note asks: Should<br \/>\nI send a copy of the book to Costanzo at<br \/>\nCarnegie-Mellon, or is it a sure thing he<br \/>\nwon\u2019t consider publishing it now?<\/p>\n<p>My visit to Eagle Pond Farm helped! I\u2019m<br \/>\nwriting!<\/p>\n<p>Will let you know more soon about that dinner&#8211;<\/p>\n<p>Love,<\/p>\n<p>Wes<\/p>\n<p>BIG CARS<\/p>\n<p>Ten years later they arrive<br \/>\non the thruway, pulling their winged<br \/>\nfenders and smiling a lane wide&#8211;<br \/>\nbig cars, old floats that took a wrong<br \/>\ncorner somewhere and lost<br \/>\nthe American Dream parade. Around them<\/p>\n<p>the strange, grilleless<br \/>\ncars of their future<br \/>\nhum at their tires&#8211;tiny aliens<br \/>\nof a planet out of gas.<\/p>\n<p>To think of their long trip<br \/>\njust beginning&#8211;the irrepressible fuel<br \/>\nrising everywhere into their tanks!<br \/>\nArmrests unfolding out of seats,<br \/>\nout of the armrests, ashtrays! Maps<br \/>\nfalling open to the new roads<\/p>\n<p>which led them, finally, here<br \/>\nto the right lands of America,<br \/>\nsuddenly the antiques of optimism<br \/>\nnobody wants or understands<br \/>\nexcept the poor. Or dictators<\/p>\n<p>cruising the boulevards of some country<br \/>\nwhere the poor do not have cars<br \/>\nand run behind until it seems<br \/>\nthat they themselves are riding<br \/>\non soft shocks, under a sun roof<br \/>\ntoward the great plenty of the New World.<\/p>\n<p>MUTE<\/p>\n<p>Once, on the last ice-cutting,<br \/>\nthe son broke through the surface<br \/>\nof their solid world,<br \/>\ncoming to rest among the folded<br \/>\nlegs of horses. Listening for him<\/p>\n<p>after all her tears was perhaps<br \/>\nwhat drew the mother<br \/>\ninto that silence. Long afternoons<br \/>\nshe sat with her daughter,<br \/>\nspeaking in the sign they invented<br \/>\ntogether, going deaf to the world.<\/p>\n<p>How, exactly, did they touch<br \/>\ntheir mouths? What was the thought<br \/>\nof the old man on the porch,<br \/>\ngrowing so drunk by nightfall<br \/>\nhe could not hear<br \/>\nmosquitoes in his ears.<\/p>\n<p>There is so much no one remembers<br \/>\nabout the farm where sound,<br \/>\neven the bawling of the unmilked cows,<br \/>\ncame to a stop.
