Hope<br \/>\nyou like them.<\/p>\n<p>I had to go ahead and have my book<br \/>\nmimeo\u2019d, since the contests are calling<br \/>\nfor manuscripts now. I\u2019m therefore<br \/>\ngoing to have to assume you like<br \/>\n<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The Faces<\/span> well enough&#8211;<\/p>\n<p>Hope all is well at the Farm&#8211;<\/p>\n<p>Love,<\/p>\n<p>Wes<\/p>\n<p>THE FAT PEOPLE OF THE OLD DAYS<\/p>\n<p>Oddly, being so large<br \/>\ngave them a sense of possibility.<\/p>\n<p>Women with huge upper arms<br \/>\nfelt freer.<\/p>\n<p>Children never stopped opening<br \/>\nthe landscapes of flesh that grew<br \/>\nin their hands.<\/p>\n<p>Their word for the thin ones<br \/>\nwhose long faces seemed<br \/>\npart of their necks<br \/>\nwas \u201cchinless\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Barking dogs and stray cats<br \/>\nwere also called \u201cchinless\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>No one knows when<br \/>\nthe thin ones began<br \/>\nto seem beautiful,<\/p>\n<p>when the fat people first worried<br \/>\nabout weight.<\/p>\n<p>A woman came to fear her knuckles<br \/>\nand elbows were sinking<br \/>\ninto dimples.<\/p>\n<p>A man believed his chin<br \/>\nwhich shook when he talked<br \/>\nwas also speaking.<\/p>\n<p>For many years<br \/>\nthe fat life continued.<\/p>\n<p>Each day inside strange houses<br \/>\nwith wide doors<br \/>\nthe fathers rose folding themselves<br \/>\ninto their pants.<\/p>\n<p>Each night the families dreamed of bones<br \/>\nhung forever in fat\u2019s<br \/>\nlocked closet.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;Wesley McNair<\/p>\n<p>A DREAM OF HERMAN<br \/>\nfor Diane<\/p>\n<p>I was driving the old Dodge wagon<br \/>\nagain, with Coke cans rolling<br \/>\nto the front at stop signs,<br \/>\nand you stroking the dash<br \/>\nevery so often to thank the car<br \/>\nfor not needing the spare tire<br \/>\nwe hadn\u2019t fixed. We were on a trip<br \/>\nthat felt like going to your father\u2019s camp, only<br \/>\nwe never got there and didn\u2019t care.<br \/>\nIt was a beautiful day, just enough wind<br \/>\ncoming into the back to make the kids<br \/>\nsquint with pure pleasure<br \/>\nas it scribbled their hair, and your mother<br \/>\npatted them, saying what a nice ride it was<br \/>\nin the odd, small voice<br \/>\nshe used only for your father.<br \/>\nIt was then in the rear-view mirror I saw him,<br \/>\nwearing the brown cardigan he always wore<br \/>\nand putting on the shining bell<br \/>\nof his saxophone as if just back<br \/>\nfrom an intermission.
