I\u2019ve been<br \/>\nconsidering writing a textbook, one that might bring<br \/>\nat least <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">some<\/span> extra money in from year to year.<br \/>\nI have two possibilities in mind. The first is a book<br \/>\nabout interdisciplinary themes in American culture.<br \/>\nIt would involve students in the study of relationships<br \/>\nbetween and among history, literature and art in<br \/>\nvarious periods of the national culture, and would<br \/>\nbe used in American studies and cross-disciplinary<br \/>\n\u201chumanities\u201d courses.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps the book is too specialized. My other<br \/>\nidea is an introduction to poetry, which would<br \/>\ninclude poems, critical notes and questions for<br \/>\nstudents.<\/p>\n<p>I feel I would have time to work on a textbook<\/p>\n<p>2\/<\/p>\n<p>during my long sabbatical in those hours when I am<br \/>\nnot writing poems. What do you think? Am I<br \/>\ncrazy? I just can\u2019t get the words of a Fullbrighter<br \/>\nI met in Argentina (from Southern Cal.) out of my<br \/>\nmind. \u201cDo a textbook and you\u2019ll always have<br \/>\nextra money coming in.\u201d I guess I feel that if<br \/>\nhe can write one, knowing (as our conversation showed)<br \/>\nno more about literature than I, I can do it, too.<\/p>\n<p>As one of the most successful authors<br \/>\nof textbooks around, you will no doubt have advice<br \/>\nfor me.
