November 12, 1980<\/p>\n

Dear Don,<\/p>\n

How wonderful it is that Joey has managed to
\ninterest John Nims in the poems! I have long hoped
\nsomeone would see something of worth in \u201cHair
\non Television,\u201d and \u201cThe Fat Enter Heaven\u201d is a poem
\nI feared no one other than you, Jane, Joey and I
\nwould like. I am very<\/span> glad they will appear in Poetry<\/span>
\nand very grateful to Joey for his good efforts and his
\ncontinuing faith.<\/p>\n

Of course Nims is correct, as you say, that \u201ctampons\u201d
\nshould be changed. I enclose a touched-up revision,
\nwhich I hope he, and you, will find acceptable.<\/p>\n

Contrary to my stated intentions of two or three
\nweeks ago, I also enclose two new poems. The reason
\nis I am worried Joey is running out of stuff to
\nsend out. Where he is getting other poems to mail
\nto Poetry<\/span> \u2013 and to the Atantic<\/span> \u2013 I cannot imagine,
\nbut he must<\/span> be at the absolute bottom of the barrel.<\/p>\n

Would the two poems help Joey with his attempts
\nat the Atlantic<\/span> (suggested, I believe, in an earlier
\nletter?) Or anywhere else?<\/p>\n

WHERE I LIVE<\/p>\n

You will come into an antique town
\nwhose houses move apart
\nas if you\u2019d interrupted
\na private discussion. This is the place
\nyou must pass through to get there.
\nImagining lives tucked in
\nlike china plates, continue driving.
\nBeyond the landscaped streets,
\nbeyond the last colonial
\ngas station and unsolved
\nby zoning is a road. It will take you
\nto old farmhouses and trees
\nwith car-tire swings.
\nSigns will announce hairdressing
\nand nightcrawlers.
\nThe timothy grass will run beside you
\nall the way to where I live.<\/p>\n
