Dear Don,<\/p>\n

I\u2019m not sure which \u201cSuperman\u201d poem you ask about,
\nsince there are two. One (\u201cThe Thugs\u2026\u201d) has been published.
\nthe other (\u201cWhen Superman Died\u2026\u201d) has not. If you
\nmeant \u201cWhen Superman Died,\u201d I\u2019ll be glad to send it
\nright away \u2013 just let me know!<\/p>\n

You\u2019ve no doubt noticed that I\u2019m including two recent
\npoems which you haven\u2019t seen. I was planning to send
\nthem later for your \u201cjudgement,\u201d [sic] but something\u2019s come up.
\nI\u2019ve just received a letter from Peter Davison, whom I
\nwrote to ask about publishing Going Back Poems<\/span> through
\nAtlantic Monthly Press. He said no to that, but I wants
\nme [sic] to send him some poems to look at for The Atlantic
\nMonthly<\/span>. I would like to send the enclosed two, if you
\nthink they are reasonably OK, along with two which Joey
\ncurrently has \u2013 ie<\/span>, \u201cOld Trees\u201d and \u201cThe Fat Enter
\nHeaven.\u201d Oh \u2013 maybe also \u201cHair on Television.\u201d<\/p>\n

But I will certainly not give Davison any of
\nthe Joey poems unless he says they are available,
\nand unless you think it advisable to send these
\nparticular ones. It may well be that Joey has hopes<\/p>\n

2\/<\/p>\n

for them elsewhere \u2013 or maybe you feel that they (or
\nthe enclosed 2) are not appropriate for The Atlantic<\/span>.
\nWhatever, I await your view of all this.<\/p>\n

Incidentally these 2 are not the only poems I\u2019ve
\nfinished recently. I\u2019ve written two others, but I
\nam holding onto those because I\u2019ve come to feel that
\nthey might become segments of another poem. I will
\ncertainly be sending these poems and others in some
\nfuture batch.<\/p>\n

Editorial note about this letter:<\/strong><\/span> Going Back Poems<\/i> was for a short time an alternative title for McNair’s book in progress, though he eventually returned to his earlier title, The Faces of Americans in 1853.<\/i><\/p>\n
